Common questions about propane

Are you new to having propane in your home? If so, you likely have some questions about propane, along with propane services. We’ve put together some information to help you.

Q. I need a propane tank. Is buying or renting best?

A. With your own propane tank comes the independence to select which delivery service you would like. However, it also means that all the bills associated with your tank—including purchase, installation and further maintenance and repairs—are on you. When you lease a propane tank from Coyne Oil & Propane, all the associated expenses and hassles are taken care of for you at a great price!

Q. How do I know if there’s a propane leak in my home?

A. Propane is easily identifiable by its distinctive smell of rotten eggs, courtesy of an odorant that’s added to make leaks more detectable. If you notice this scent in your home or building, practice sound propane safety protocols and vacate the premises immediately. Before exiting, eliminate any possible sources of ignition, like candles or cigarettes. Additionally, do not use phones or light switches as you leave the site. Instead, call 911 and Coyne Oil & Propane once you are a safe distance away. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions about the safe use of propane.

Q. Why is my propane tank gauge never 100% full after delivery?

A. Propane tanks are never 100% full. When we deliver propane, we fill it to 80% full. This is done for safety reasons. Propane, like other liquids, expands in heat. You may notice that your propane tank gauge levels can go up and down over the course of the day depending on the temperature, as the propane inside expands as it warms and contracts as it cools. The empty space inside your tank allows for your propane’s expansion to occur safely.
